Thurrock Council are preparing a new Local Plan for the area and if adopted, its policies will be used in the determination of planning applications in the borough. The new Local Plan would replace the existing Core Strategy Local Plan that was first adopted in December 2011 and updated in January 2015. It would seek to address issues such as affordable housing, open spaces and town centres whilst also setting out policies for specific areas, sites that could be developed for new uses and sites that could be protected so their existing uses can continue.

The Council are running a public consultation on the initial proposals of the emerging Local Plan. This consultation provides an opportunity to comment on the direction of the Plan at an early stage.

Alongside the consultation on the Local Plan initial proposals, the Council have carried out an integrated impact assessment on the proposals, and prepared a draft Thurrock Design Charter which is the first step towards a Design Guide. Consultations are also open for these two documents for the community to provide their thoughts on.

The consultation opened on the 20th December 2023 and will close on the 19th February 2024. Further information on the emerging Local Plan and the consultations can be found on the Council’s website.
